Cover is a mechanic representing when a character takes cover behind an object. Whether it be wooden palisades, the sides of a doorway, or a slight dip in the terrain, cover comes in three modes: Total cover, Full cover, and Half cover. Cover is drawn as a line between grid tiles on the map, and it gives various bonuses against ranged attacks and AOE's depending on the type of cover. Cover only applies if the ranged attack / AOE has to go through said cover to reach you.

Total cover is denoted by walls and other features drawn on the map. Ranged attacks cannot hit creatures behind total cover, nor are creatures effected by explosives and other AOE's behind cover. Total cover represents building walls, sturdy doors, and general large protective surfaces.

Full cover is denoted by a blue line on the map. A creature behind Full cover gains a +6 bonus to AC against ranged attacks and AOE's. Full cover represents large fallen tables, arrowslits, portcullises, and other large but not fully sturdy / sized objects. You may also take full cover around corners and open doorways.

Half cover is denoted by a yellow line on the map. Half cover grants a +3 bonus to AC against ranged attacks and AOE's. Half cover represents things such as sandbags, counters, narrow tree trunks, and other objects that cover roughly half of your body.
